Governor Newsom Signs SB 1160, Giving California the Data to Address Evictions

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – What We All Deserve (WWAD) celebrates Governor Gavin Newsom's signing of SB 1160: Eviction Data Reporting, which WWAD co-sponsored in partnership with Senator María Elena Durazo. The law requires the Judicial Council to collect publicly available data on evictions and unlawful detainer cases, giving California a clearer picture of eviction trends statewide.

Evictions affect hundreds of thousands of Californians every year, yet the data needed to address this crisis has been fragmented and inaccessible. You cannot fix what you cannot see. With SB 1160, the state can identify eviction trends over time, see where eviction pressures are most concentrated, and design housing policy that responds to what communities are experiencing.

“This law lays the groundwork for stronger, more informed housing policies across California by ensuring policymakers, organizations, and advocates have the data they need to understand eviction trends and respond effectively,” said WWAD Executive Director Tanaya Safi. “With SB 1160 and the coalition behind it, California is setting future policies up for success and taking an important step toward keeping more people housed.”
